What’s happening with the Children’s nightwear standard in Australia?

I know that people involved in designing, buying and supplying children’s nightwear in Australia will be looking forward to the revised Australian children’s nightwear standard.

I have been involved in the revision of Australian/New Zealand Standard 1249:2003. Here’s where I believe things are at.

The good news

The good news is that Standards Australia has published the revised standard (Official release date 30 June 2014)!

It’s quite a change from the 2003 version in lots of ways.

The vast majority of changes are aimed at making compliance easier. But there’s also a few new elements that will impact certain products.

If you saw the draft revision that was available for public comment in May 2013, you will have an idea of some changes.

But do not rely on that version, because the committee received lots of comments and the specifications have been revised quite a bit since then.

But hold on . . .

Even now that AS/NZS 1249-2014 is published, it won’t become law until the ACCC puts the revised regulation to the federal minister.

The minister, on advice from the ACCC, can make changes to a published standard. It’s important to be aware that changes are possible.

And also be aware that it won’t be legal to sell garments made to the 2014 version until the minister makes the new regulation. The ACCC will provide details of the regulation review on the Product Safety Australia website.

And note too that a minor error has been picked up in AS/NZS 1249:2014. Amendment #1 was published on 17 November 2014.

What you can do now

Product Safety Solutions has now published an e-book that goes through the key changes in the new standard. By reading this, you can plan ahead for the ACCC’s review and the implementation.

And to be kept in the loop with key organisations, register with:

ACCC’s Product Safety Australia website http://www.productsafety.gov.au/ or via Twitter @ACCCProdSafety

You can follow Standards Australia on Twitter @standardsaus.

SAI Global, which publishes the Standards http://infostore.saiglobal.com/store/ and add AS/NZS1249 to StandardsWatch.

And of course the Product Safety Solutions website and Facebook account.
